Head coach Mike Brown was deeply saddened by the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, and refused to discuss basketball after the Kings' season-opening win over the Jazz.

"I don't even know what happened," Brown said. "But I do know that as a country we have to do something. If a mass shooting at a grocery store in Maine that leaves 22 people dead doesn't touch anyone, I don't know."

Brown said he was frustrated that mass shootings continue to happen in the United States.

"It's a sad day for our country," he said. "It's a sad day for the world. And unless we decide to do something about it, this is going to continue to happen, and our children are not going to be able to enjoy life in America because we don't know how to solve the problems that are in front of us."

Brown praised NBA commissioner Adam Silver and players Chris Paul and LeBron James for using their platform to speak out against gun violence. But he also said that the NBA's efforts haven't been enough to stop mass shootings.

"I don't even want to talk about basketball," Brown said. "We played a game. It was fun. Obviously, we won. But if we can't do anything to fix this, it's over. It's over for our country when things like this happen over and over again."

Kings forward Harrison Barnes also spoke out against gun violence.

"It's devastating to hear news like this," Barnes said. "And you pray for the community, for the people who lost their loved ones. But I think as a country we have to get the gun crisis under control."

Barnes said that the United States needs to do more than just talk about gun violence.

"It's more than simply saying, well, we can put a policy in place so that we can change what's happening," Barnes said. "These events are becoming more frequent, more deadly, more destructive, and we have to get them under control."
